WATERVILLE, Maine - Sophomore Amanda Cochrane (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) converted a lay-up off a press-break with one minute remaining to give the Colby College women's basketball team a six-point cushion on its way to an eventual 80-70 win over Middlebury College on Friday night. The White Mules improve their overall record to 10-7, while the Panthers fall to 10-6.
Colby jumped out to a quick 16-4 lead behind the outstanding play of sophomores Kim Condon (Presque Isle, Me./Presque Isle) and Jen Hallee (Nashua, N.H./Nashua), who finished the game with 20 and 17 points, respectively. Middlebury hung around, however, pulling back to within ten at the half.
The Panthers continued their
came back throughout the second half, getting several clutch baskets from
junior Heather Langlois (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) to pull within four
at 72-68 with 1:09 left. However, on the ensuing inbound play, Middlebury
tried to full-court press the Mules,
who quickly pushed the ball
up to junior Jen Usher (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) on the right wing. Usher
then found a wide-open Cochrane under the basket for the easy two and a
six-point lead. Junior Jen McGonagle (Pepperill, Mass./North Middlesex)
knocked down six of six free throws in the final 45 seconds of play to
seal the 80-70 win.
Cochrane scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while junior Jenn Freese (Veazie, Me./Orono) added four points, 10 boards, and five assists.
Langlois led the Panthers
with 20 points, while Kelly McCarthy (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) added
16 points and seven rebounds.
LEWISTON, Maine - With her first basket 1:22 into the game, Bates College junior Emily King (Lebanon, N.H/Lebanon) became the quickest player in school history to score her 1,000th career point, as the Bobcats (15-1) defeated the Wesleyan University Cardinals (6-9), 79-67.
King reached the 1,000-point mark in her 67th career game, surpassing Sarah Bonkovsky (Class of 1997), who reached the milestone in 73 games, in the first game of her senior season. Bonkovsky went on to become the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,407 points. With 14 points tonight, King ranks seventh on the all-time list with 1,012.
In a nip and tuck game that featured five ties and six lead changes, the Bobcats and Cardinals were tied at 49 just under seven minutes into the second half, when Bates went on a 12-2 run over four minutes with King scoring eight points and sophomore center Katy Dutille (Lebanon, N.H. /Lebanon) scoring four points and dishing two assists.
Dutille led all scorers with
21 points, while Wesleyan junior Lynn St. Martin (Westport, Mass./Bishop
Stang) and senior Jill Pelletier (Bar Harbor/Mt. Desert Island) each had
18. St. Martin had 13 points in the first half as the Cardinals trailed
by only four going into the break against the #24 team in the nation. Bates
senior A.T. Taylor (Orono/Orono) led all players with 10 rebounds.
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Colby College men's basketball team shot 51.9 percent from the floor, including seven of 15 from beyond the three-point arc, as the White Mules defeated Middlebury College by a score of 81-68. Colby improves its season record to 11-6, while the Panthers drop to 7-9.
The Mules took control late in the first half, as sophomore Sam Clark (Woolwich, Me./Morse) sparked a 15-3 run to put his team up by 11. Colby eventually took a 37-29 advantage into halftime, and pushed that lead to 14 just four minutes into the second half. However, Middlebury would claw its way back behind the play of Chad Malone, who led the team with 15 points, and trailed by as little as three with 6:47 left in the game.
Facing a five-point deficit with 1:45 remaining in the contest, the Panthers were forced to foul, but Colby nailed all eight of its free throw attempts in the final minute to seal the 81-68 victory.
Senior co-captain James Spidle (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) led the White Mules with 16 points, while junior Ken Allen (Monson, Me./Bangor) added 15 points, including four of Colby's eight last-minutes free throws. Clark also played well for the Mules, scoring 12 points, grabbing six rebounds, and recording a team-high three steals.
Malone paced the Panthers
with 15 points, while John Barrett added 12 points, all on three-pointers,
before fouling out with 5:22 left in the game.
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Wesleyan University Cardinals (10-8) broke a 42-42 tie with an 11-4 burst, led by three 3-point FG and never trailed thereafter, taking an 87-77 decision from the Bates College Bobcats (9-8).
The Bobcats got as close as three points at 59-53 with 8:30 remaining in the game, but Wesleyan answered with a 12-3 run, giving them a 71-59 lead with 5:25 to go. The lead never dipped below eight points after that.
Bates was led by first-year
forward/guard Ed Walker (Roxbury, Mass.), who had 23 points, and first-year
center Alex Wilson (Duxbury, Mass.), who notched a double-double with 17
points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Bobcats' two leading scorers, first-year
guard Billy Hart (Haverhill, Mass.) and Rommel Padonou (Libreville, Gabon),
who normally combine for 35 points per game were held to 13 and 10 points
respectively. For Hart, it marked the first game of the season in which
he did not hit a 3-point field goal.
WATERVILLE, Maine - Colby
College sophomore Steve Cunningham (Hamilton, Ontario) scored with 6:13
left in regulation and senior goalie Jason Cherella (Onset, Mass.) made
40 saves in net as the White Mules became the first team to salvage a point
against unbeaten Norwich University by skating to a 1-1 tie on Friday night.
Norwich, ranked first in the nation
in the USA Hockey Online
Poll, and first in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East,
falls to 17-0-1, while Colby's record goes to 9-6-3.
Junior Curt Healey (Burlington, Ontario) put Nowrich on top early, scoring on a pass from first-year Matt Moran (Brighton, Mass.) midway through the first period. The Cadets would carry the 1-0 lead into the third period, but a charging penalty called on first-year Jim Mahoney (Charlestown, Mass.) at the 12:25 mark opened the door for Colby. On their fifth power play opportunity of the game, the White Mules finally converted as Cunningham scored on a pass from Mike Dalton (Lynnfield, Mass.) at 13:47 to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams would have decent
scoring chances in overtime, but Cherella and Norwich goaltender Nate Eusko
(East Hartford, Conn.) stood strong, making three saves apeice in the extra
session. Eusko finished the contest with a total of 23 saves.

WESTBROOK, ME - In a battle
of unbeaten teams, Lewiston High School and Westbrook High School Girls

DYER BROOK, Maine - Senior
Sam Michaud scored his 1000th high school point on a free throw just before
the half in a game against the Limestone Eagles on Tuesday night.
Sam scored a total of 13 points for the Warriors last night to help them
defeat the Eagles 52-51. More information and photos to follow later today.
WATERVILLE, Maine - In a
thrilling contest that featured 10 ties and 14 lead changes, the Bowdoin
College women's basketball team defeated the Colby College White Mules
by a score of 67-63 on Tuesday night. The victory improves the Polar Bears'
record to 11-4 on the season, while the Mules fall to 9-7 overall, 1-5
in the conference, and 0-3 in Colby-Bates-Bowdoin
(CBB) matchups.
Colby played well early in the game, using its domination of the offensive glass to take its largest lead at 17-11. Bowdoin would fight back, however, behind the brilliant play of junior guard Samantha Good (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill), who scored 11 of her game-high 21 points in the first half. After the Polar Bears tied the game, 22-22, at the 3:15 mark, the two teams traded baskets until Raegan LaRochelle (Augusta, Me./Cony) hit a short jumper to give Bowdoin a 32-30 lead at the break.
The game remained close throughout the second half, with Colby's Kim Condon (Presque Isle, Me./Presque Isle) sinking a foul line jumper to even things at 57-57 with 3:45 left in the contest. Good then answered with a three-point bomb to give a Polar Bears 60-57 lead, and after first-year Jessie Mayol (Westbrook, Me./Westbrook) came up with a key steal, a lay-up by LaRochelle pushed the lead to five with less than a minute remaining.
After the teams traded foul shots, the White Mules' Jen McGonagle (Pepperill, Mass./North Middlesex) hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to two with 24.5 seconds left . However, Mayol recovered from a shaky first half to calmly sink two clutch free throws with 23 ticks remaining, sealing the 67-63 victory for Bowdoin.
In addition to her 21 points, Good joined Mayol and sophomore Lauren Myers (South Boston, Mass./Fontbonne) with a team-high six rebounds. Myers also added 14 points, while LaRochelle chipped in with 10 points on five-of-nine shooting.
Condon led Colby with 16
points to go along with eight boards, while sophomore Amanda Cochrane (Arlington,
Mass./Arlington) added 13 points and nine caroms.
BRUNSWICK, Maine - After helping the Bowdoin men's basketball team put together a 2-1 week, forward David Lovely (Milton, Mass./Boston College H.S.) has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) and Maine Coaches and Writers Association Player of the Week. Lovely, a co-captain of the Polar Bears, led Bowdoin in scoring in all three games during the week while shooting superbly from the floor and the foul line.
Lovely started out the week with a 33 point effort in a 104-79 victory over the Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday (1/26). He nailed 7-of-10 shots from the floor, including 2-of-4 from beyond the three point arc. Lovely earned more than half of his points at the free throw line, converting 17 of his 22 attempts. The 17 made free throws is the third most in a single game, trailing just Brud Stover (23 in 1967) and Nick Browning (21 in 1994).
Connecticut College - the
No. 1 team in the region and No. 3 in the nation - came to Morrell Gymnasium
on Friday afternoon. Although the Polar Bears bowed to the Camels, 81-66,
Lovely still had a solid game with 20
points on 9-of-15 shooting
from the floor.
Lovely and the Polar Bears finished the week with a home game against NESCAC rival Wesleyan. Again, the 6-foot-4, 215-pound senior was the difference as he drained 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds in an 88-77 victory. Lovely made a living at the line once more, making 12-of-13 attempts from the charity stripe.
For the week, Lovely averaged 26.7 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 64 percent (23-of-36) from the floor and 83 percent (30-of-36) from the free throw line.
"David is our go-to guy and
in big games you expect those type of players to lead you," said Bowdoin
Head Coach Tim Gilbride. "He is playing very smart basketball, taking the
shot when it is there, but making the
good pass when it is not.
We have a couple of difficult road games coming up, so David will have
to be a positive force for us."
So far this season, Lovely is the Polar Bears' leader in scoring (21.3 ppg) and rebounding (7.3 rpg). He is ranked second in the NESCAC in scoring and is fourth in field goal percentage at 55 percent (106-of-194). Lovely has also made his way to the free throw line three times as often as his closest teammate, making 88 of his 117 attempts.
With eight games left in
the regular season, Lovely is just 30 points shy of becoming the 15th player
in the 58 years of Bowdoin basketball to record 1,000 points in a career.
He is also 96 rebounds shy of becoming the 13th player with at least 500
boards.
LEWISTON, Maine - First-year guard Billy Hart of Haverhill, Mass., has been named Maine Basketball Writers and Coaches Association (MBWCA) Rookie of the Week for the week ending Jan. 31.
Despite an 0-2 record last
week, Hart was the Bobcats' brightest star. He averaged 18 points, 6.5
assists and two rebounds per game, while shooting 48 percent from the floor
(12-25) and 46.7 percent from 3-point range (7-15). Hart recorded 13 assists
without a turnover, and is second in
Maine and 18th among all
NCAA Division III players with an average of six assists per game. As Bates'
leading scorer in eight of the last nine games, Hart has raised his scoring
average to 18.7 points per game, sixth-best in Maine. Hart's 3.75 3 point
field goals per game are ninth in the NCAA.
Maine statistical rankings include several National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II members who are not counted in NCAA rankings.
As a team, the Bobcats are
scoring 82.3 points per game, fourth-best in the state, while shooting
39.8 percent from 3-point range, ranking them third in Maine. With a 9-7
record, Bates has won three times as many games as they did a season ago,
with eight contests left on the
schedule.
Hart is a 1998 graduate of
Deerfield Academy. He is the son of William and Patricia Hart, Haverhill.
BRUNSWICK, Maine - After winning its last three games - and eight of the last nine - the Bowdoin women's basketball team has been ranked eighth in region in the latest New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) poll. The Polar Bears swept Connecticut College and Wesleyan (Conn.) University this weekend to improve their record to 10-4 on the season and also move up in the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) poll to third.
"I think it's a compliment when you consider the quality of the team's in this region," said Bowdoin Head Coach Stefanie Pemper, who is in her first year at the helm of the Polar Bears. "Looking ahead to our schedule, we have some huge tests ahead of us so we can savor this for about a second."
Leading the charge of late
has been junior co-captain Samantha Good (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill).
Over the weekend, Good averaged 14.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists
and 3.0 steals to spark the Polar Bears. Perhaps
the most telling stat was
Good committed just one turnovers in the two games even though she played
much of her minutes at the point guard position. For her efforts she was
named to the New England Small College
Athletic Conference, NEWBA
and MWBCA honor roll.
Bowdoin has a challenging
week ahead of them with three talented conference opponents on the slate.
The week starts off with a rematch with archrival Colby College in Waterville
at 7:00pm on Tuesday (1/2). The Polar
Bears defeated Colby, 76-62,
two weeks ago but the White Mules have been bolstered by the return of
sophomore Kim Condon who was sidelined for much of the first half of the
season with an injury.
The Polar Bears return home
to Morrell Gymnasium for a weekend homestand. Williams College, ranked

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin
College first-year Mike Carosi (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate H.S.) continued
his superb inaugural season this week by being named the New England Small
College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Rookie of the Week for the period
ending January 30th. Carosi netted three goals in the 2-1 week for the
Polar Bears to take over the team lead in
points.
Carosi now has 10 goals on the season along with nine assists for a team-high 19 points after 18 games for the 8-7-2 Polar Bears. His 19 points also places him in a four-way tie for the top spot among rookies within the ECAC East league.
"Mike continues to impress game-after-game," said Bowdoin Head Coach Terry Meagher. "He is never tentative when he goes out on the ice, no matter who we are playing against, and that is not always the case with a first-year. We will need Mike to play well down the stretch."
Carosi and the rest of the
Polar Bears will continue their fight for a playoff berth this weekend
when two of the top programs in the country visit Dayton Arena. On Friday
(2/5) night, four-time defending national champion Middlebury College comes

she drained from half court mark! The entire gym erupted in a standing
ovation when Laura hit the half court bomb. Great job Laura!!!
