The teams came out of the gate cold as Bowdoin (11-7) held a 11-10 lead with 9:00 minutes left in the first half. The Polar Bears built a nine-point lead on back-to-back deep three-pointers from Nate Houser (Medway, Mass./Xaverian) and a fast-break layup from Hugh Coleman (Boston, Mass./Charlestown) at 27-16. Richardson Scores a Pair As Colby Wins Grudge With Bowdoin
Christopher M. Buck - Sports Information Director, Colby College

WATERVILLE, Maine - Colby College sophomore Scott Richardson (Sackville, N.B./Moncton Flyers) netted his 12th and 13th goals of the season as the White Mules defeated the Bowdoin College Polar Bears by a score of 3-1 in intercollegiate men's ice hockey action on Wednesday night. The victory improves Colby's record to 10-6-4, while Bowdoin falls to 9-9-2.

Richardson scored on a slapshot midway through the first period to give the White Mules, ranked eighth in the latest NCAA East poll, an early 1-0 lead. Bowdoin came back to tie the game late in the period, however, as junior Josh Weiner (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) scored just his second goal of the
season on the power play at 18:43.

Colby regained the lead on the power play just two minutes into the second period, as Richardson's wrist shot from the corner deflected of a Bowdoin defenseman's skate and trickled in, giving the White Mules a 2-1 advantage.

Polar Bear goalie Josh Clifford (Abington, Mass./Holderness) would keep the game close over the next 36 minutes, but Colby clinched the victory with two minutes left in the game, as sophomore Chris Tashjian (Stoneham, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) fed Steve Cunningham (Hamilton, Ont./St. Louis Sting) on a 2-on-1 break to  give the Mules a 3-1 edge.

Clifford played well in place of Colin Robinson (Mason, N.H./Lawrence Academy), who missed the game with an injury, as the junior goaltender made 38 saves in defeat for Bowdoin. Senior assistant captain Jason Cherella
(Onset, Mass./Canterbury School), who was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference and New England Small College Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his performances this past weekend, had another fine
game for Colby, making 19 saves on 20 shots.

The White Mules will next compete at the Howe Cup at Harvard University on February 19.

Adam Levin - Sports Information Director, Bates College

STANDISH, Maine - The Bates College women's basketball team (17-1) had one of their best shooting performances of the season, hitting 54.5 percent from the floor as the Bobcats defeated the St. Joseph's College Monks (18-5), 69-53.

The game was close buy low-scoring for the early part of the first half. With Bates leading, 15-13, with eight minutes remaining in the opening stanza, the Bobcats went on a 26-15 run over the next five and a half minutes. Bates took its biggest lead of the first half on an offensive rebound by first-year guard Sarah Williamson (Plainfield, N.J.), and Bates took a 31-21 lead into the lockerroom. In the second half, the Bobcats maintained their 10-point cushion over the first five minutes before going on an 18-8 run over an eight minute span that put the game out of reach at 53-33 with 7:50 remaining.

Bates was led by junior forward Emily King (Lebanon, N.H.), who had a game-high 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Williamson had a career-high 12 points off the bench on five-of-seven shooting, including both of her 3-point attempts. Junior guard Jolene Thurston (Post Mills, Vt.) had 12 points on six-of-nine shootiing. Sophomore Katy Dutille (Lebanon, N.H.) had eight rebounds, while senior guard Colleen McCrave (Walpole, Mass.) had seven assists and five steals.

Huskies Stun Panthers 81-67
USM Release

PLYMOUTH, N.H.  --  Sophomore Wade Millett (East Waterboro, Maine) came off the bench to lead five University of Southern Maine Huskies in double figures by scoring a career-high 15 points as the Huskies stunned the second place Plymouth State College Panthers, 81-67, in a Little East Conference game Wednesday night.

The win snaps the Huskies' three-game losing skid and improves their overall record to 12-9.  Southern Maine, in the middle of red hot race for a home berth in the upcoming Little East playoffs,  is now 6-5 in conference play.  The loss drops Plymouth State to 14-6 overall and 8-3 in the  conference.

The teams played through six ties and eight lead changes in the second half before the Huskies put together a 20-5 run over the final 4:47 to take home the win and avenge an 83-65 loss to Panthers in January.  The win was the Huskies first against the Panthers since the 1995-96 season.

Southern Maine sophomore Rodney Broussard (Casco, Maine) followed Millett's 15 points with 13 points and nine rebounds.  Senior Mike Fennessy (Lewiston, Maine) contributed 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.  Junior guard Corey Zimmerman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) added 12 points, and Scott finished with 10 points in his first start.

Martinez shared team-high scoring honors with senior Adam DeChristopher (Brockton, Mass.) as each scored 13 points.  McQueen and Pettiford-Jones each finished with 12 points.  Southern Maine did a much better defensive job in the second half limiting Martinez, McQueen and Pettiford-Jones to just six points in the second half.

Demo Scores Career-High 19 Points to Lead Huskies Past Panthers
USM Release

PLYMOUTH, N.H.  --  Senior forward Destiny Demo (Skowhegan, Maine) scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to lead the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 69-54 victory over the Plymouth State College Panthers in a Little East Conference game Wednesday night.

The victory improves the Huskies' overall record to 18-3, and keeps them tied atop the Little East standings with Western Connecticut State University at 10-1.  Plymouth State, which had its  five-game winning streak stopped, slips to 12-9 overall and 5-6 in Little East play.

Demo hit seven of ten shots from the floor and all five free throws for her 19 points.  Her 11 rebounds was one shy of her career high established earlier this winter against Middlebury.

Sophomore Jessica Hopkins (Hampden, Maine), starting in place of senior Tracy Libby (Falmouth, Maine) who did not make the trip due to illness, tied her career-high with 14 points. Junior Julie Plant (Gorham, Maine) tossed in 12 points.

Santoli led three PSC players in double figures with 14 points.  Junior Courtney Jacques (Belmont, N.H.) scored 12 points, and Fournier added 10 points.

Southern Maine's defense held Plymouth State 20 points below its conference leading 74.4 points per game average.  The Panthers shot an ice-cold 29 percent (15 for 52) in the contest while the Huskies converted 42 percent (24 for 57) of their shots.  USM had a 41-35 edge on the boards despite the 6-foot-1 Libby's absence.

UMaine-Farmington Edges Colby, 66-60
Christopher M. Buck, Sports Information Director - Colby College

FARMINGTON, Maine - The Colby College women's basketball team's playoff hopes took a brushing blow on Tuesday night, as the University of Maine at Farmington handed the White Mules their second consecutive defeat by a score of 66-60.  The victory improves UMF's record to 12-7, while Colby drops to 10-9.

The Mules, who had battled New England Small Conference Athletic foes in their last five matchups, found no pity from the in-state rival Beavers. UMF, led by Becky Roak's team-leading 15 points, took command early in the game and held a 34-30 lead at the break.

The Mules had difficulty shooting all day, connecting on only 3-of-19 from behind the three-point arc.  Sophomore Kim Condon (Presque Isle, Me.) managed 18 points to lead the Mules, while forward Jen Hallee (Nashua, N.H.) pulled down 10 rebounds.

The Mules hope to get back on the winning track this weekend when they travel south to face Amherst on Firday night and Trinity on Saturday afternoon.

Adam Levin, Sports Information Director - Bates College

The Bates College men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept the Bowdoin College Polar Bears this evening, earning an outright share of the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin (CBB) conference title for the men and a three-way tie for the women.

The men's meet was never in doubt, as the Bobcats won eight of the 12 events, taking the top two spots in five events for the 140-94 victory. First year diver Andrew Hastings (Weston, Mass.) was Bates' only multiple winner. The Bobcats took the top two spots in the 50-yard freestyle when junior Paul Urbanczyk (Washington, D.C) and sophomore Paul Blaney (Bar Harbor) swam a dead heat of 23.03 seconds.

The Bates women jumped out quickly, taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay, establishing a 15-2 lead. Bowdoin closed the scoring to four points, 58-54, by sweeping the top three spots in one meter diving, but the Bobcats answered by taking the top three in the next event, the 100-yard butterfly, led by sophomore Pamela Murchie (Westbrook). The Bobcats led, 102-86, headed into the final three events. Bowdoin took three of the top four spots in three-meter diving to close the lead to 107 100, and swept the top three in the 100-year breaststroke, led by first-year Liz Buell (Cheshire, Conn.), establishing the Polar Bears' first lead of the meet, 116-110, headed into the final event. The Bobcats responded, taking the 200-yard freestyle relay's first and third position to clinch the 123-120 win.

Both Bates teams finish the dual meet season with a 7-3 records. For the men, it is their highest win total since 1985-86 and their third-consecutive CBB title. The women post their highest win total since 1995-96. Bowdoin's men finish at 2-7, while their women are 4-5.

WCSU Colonials Nip USM Women Huskies in Overtime, 47-46
USM Release

DANBURY, Conn.  --  Senior Yolanda Harris (East Hartford, Conn.) made two free throws  with 14.1 second left in overtime to give the Western Connecticut State University Colonials a 47-46 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies in a contest between the top two  women's basketball teams in the Little East Conference at Feldman Arena Saturday afternoon.

The lost snapped the Huskies 13-game winning streak, and was their first lost to a Little East opponent since February 1, 1997, a span of 34 games.  Southern Maine is now 17-3 overall.  Western Connecticut improves to 16-4 overall.  The win was the Colonials first against the Huskies after nine straight losses dating back to February 1996.  The two teams are now tied for first place in  the conference with 9-1 records.

After Harris made her two free throws, the Huskies had a difficult last second shot by junior guard Julie Plant (Gorham, Maine) bounce out at the buzzer.

The game was a defensive struggle throughout as neither team shot well from the field.  Southern Maine was held to a season-low 29 percent (17 for 59) from the floor.  Western Connecticut shot just 30 percent (16 for 54) and committed 28 turnovers.

The Huskies trailed by as many as eight (18-10) in the first half before a 14-0 run over the final nine minutes gave them a 24-18 lead at the break.

Western Conn. came back in the second half to regain the lead (31-30) with 9:50 to play on a three-point hoop by freshman Stacey Kurtyka (Derby, Conn.).  There were three more lead changes before Plant buried two free throws with 1:05 left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

The Huskies took their only lead (46-45) in the overtime with 33 seconds to go when Plant converted a lay-up off a pass from freshman Niki Dominiczak (Dixfield, Maine).

Plant led the Huskies with 14 points, and senior center Tracy Libby (Falmouth, Maine) added 10 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.

Senior Lillian Rembert (New Haven, Conn.) was the only Western Conn. player to reach double figures with 14 points to share game-high scoring honors with Plant.

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team is two wins away from clinching its fourth-straight berth in the ECAC Women's Division III Tournament heading into this weekend. If the Polar Bears are to seal a bid to the postseason, they will have to get by two of their divisional foes. Bowdoin hosts Amherst College on Saturday at 7:00pm before entertaining the University of Southern Maine on Sunday afternoon at 3:00pm.

Bowdoin will be facing a pair of teams they have seen already this season. On January 9th, the Polar Bears headed to Gorham, Maine, and used a 14-save effort from Katie Worthing (Brunswick, Maine) to blank the Huskies, 4-0. First-year Carrie Simonds (Belmont, Mass.) netted a pair of goals in the winning effort.

Beth Fulton (Exeter, N.H.) is Southern Maine's (6-7-1, 4-7-0) top scorer with four goals and 19 assist for 23 points. Molly Duer (Montreal, Quebec) has played most of the minutes in the Huskies' goal with a .892 save percentage and a 2.64 goals against average.

On January 10th, Bowdoin (10-6-1, 9-2-1 ECAC) traveled to Amherst and routed the Lady Jeffs, 8-0. The Polar Bears outshot Amherst 76-11 on the afternoon and used two goals by Jane MacLeod (Deerfield, Mass.) and three assists from Kim Mimnaugh (Darien, Conn.) for the victory while Kate Connelly (Belmont, Mass.) turned away all 11 shots she faced.

Genny Furst (Deephaven, Minn.) is one of the most dangerous scorers in the league and leads Amherst (6-8-0, 3-8-0) with 16 goals and 14 assists for 30 points. She is supported by Sarah O'Keefe (W. Hartford,
Conn.) and Gretchen Bowe (Hampstead, N.H.) who both have 22 points. Emma Trask (Pennington, N.J.) made 68 saves in the first meeting between the two schools and has a 5.93 goals against average.

"We played very well against those two teams the first time," said Bowdoin Head Coach Michele Amidon. "It is important that we not let down this weekend because not only can we clinch, but it will keep us in the running for a first round bye."

The ECAC Women's Division III League Tournament will consist of the four divisional winners plus two at-large selections. On Wednesday, March 3, the preliminary round of the tournament will begin, with the No. 6 team playing the No. 3 team at the highest seed and the No. 5 seed traveling to the No. 4 seed (the top two teams receive byes). After the preliminary games have been decided, the final four teams will play at the No. 1 seed on March 6th and 7th.

Bowdoin's Women's Basketball Hits The Road For Tough Weekend
Jac Coyne - Sports Information Director,  Bowdoin College

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team has been ranked No. 6 in the latest NCAA Division III Northeast region poll and the Polar Bears must travel to two tough conference opponents this weekend. Bowdoin will put its 12-5 record and regional ranking on the line this Friday night when they travel to New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) foe Trinity College for a 7:00pm game before facing Amherst on the road Saturday at 3:00pm.

Bowdoin has been relying on the play of junior co-captain Samantha Good (Haverhill, Mass.) to boost the team of late. In the Polar Bears' last game against Middlebury - a 73-68 victory - Good showed her versatility,
scoring 12 points, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out seven assists and making seven steals. Good is currently second on the team in scoring with a 12.3 average behind sophomore Lauren Myers (So. Boston, Mass.) who is leading the team in scoring (16.1) and rebounding (7.4).

The Polar Bears have also used a pair of first-years in pivotal roles. Point guard Jessie Mayol (Westbrook, Maine) has started every game and is averaging 4.2 assists and 2.4 steals per game while nailing a team-high 19 three-pointers. Jess Farmer (Longmeadow, Mass.) has provided Bowdoin with a strong inside threat off the bench. She is leading the team, and the conference, in field goal percentage accuracy by making 66-of-101 shots (65.4 percent). The Polar Bears will need all their weapons this weekend.

"Being ranked sixth puts our goals in a perspective that we haven't had until now," said Bowdoin Head Coach Stefanie Pemper, who is in her first year with the Polar Bears. "We still control our own destiny and we're very fortunate to be able to say that. We have five important games in the next two weeks before our rematch with Bates. We have to continue to improve as a team in terms of playing smart, complimenting each other, and
playing with confidence."

After this weekend, Bowdoin will again be on the road when they travel to Farmington, Maine, to take on Maine-Farmington at 5:30 on February 17th.

Christopher M. Buck - Sports Information Director, Colby College

WATERVILLE, Maine - Colby College junior Brian Hansen (Foxboro,
Mass./Foxboro) hit a three-pointer with just under a minute left to snap a
69-69 tie and lift the White Mules to an eventual 74-69 victory over the
Amherst College Lord Jeffs on Friday night. The win pushes Colby's season
record to 12-8, while Amherst falls to 11-6.

The Lord Jeffs jumped out to a quick 31-19 lead early in the contest, but
the White Mules came back to take a 32-31 lead behind the outside shooting
of junior guard Ken Allen (Monson, Me./Bangor). Allen hit consecutive
three-pointers to cap the 13-0 run, and, after the Jeffs answered with two
quick baskets,  converted a three-point play to tie the game, 35-35, at the
half.

The two teams remained close throughout the second half, with Amherst's
Brian Daoust (Dover, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) hitting a triple with 1:50

White Mule sophomore David Forsyth (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills) found
a wide-open Hansen, who knocked down just his second field goal of the game
to give Colby a three-point advantage. The assist was Forsyth's
team-leading sixth of the game.

On the ensuing possession, the Lord Jeffs managed to get off four shots,
including two long-range attempts by Daoust, before Colby senior Nahum
Meisner (Skowhegan, Me./MCI) finally pulled down the rebound. The White

Colby Blasts Trinity, 3-1
Christopher M. Buck - Sports Information Director, Colby College

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College men's ice hockey team exploded for three goals in a five-minute span of the second period, and senior goalie
Jason Cherella (Onset, Mass./Canterbury School) made 20 saves in net as the White Mules defeated Trinity College by a score of 3-1 on Friday night. The win gives Colby (11-6-4 overall, 8-2-4 ECAC) some breathing room over the Bantams in the ECAC East, as the Mules earn their 19th and 20th points to hold on to fifth place, while Trinity (10-10-0 overall, 8-6-0 ECAC) remains
in sixth place with 16 points.

After the two teams combined for just ten shots on goal in the first
period, the White Mules' offense came alive in the second. Senior Masood
Dehnavifar (Chicago, Ill./Westminster School) started things off with an
unassisted goal at 9:22. Then, at 13:04, first-year James LaLiberty
(Waterville, Me./USA National Under 18 Team) lit the lamp for his third
goal of the season, and 58 seconds later, sophomore Chris Tashjian
(Stoneham, Mass./Valley Jr. Warriors) scored to give Colby a 3-0 edge.

Trinity would finally dent the scoreboard three minutes into the third
period, as junior Alexander Sullivan (Plymouth, Minn./Lawrenceville) beat
Cherella on the power play to cut the Mules' lead to two. However, the
Bantams would not score again in the final 17 minutes, as Colby went on to
take the 3-1 victory.
